Soul music developed at the end of the 1950s from various musical styles, such as rhythm and blues and gospel. In the 1960s, various hits that not only climbed to the top of the American charts made Soul increasingly popular. The largest number of No. 1 hits was produced by Motown. But also other labels like Phillysound or Salsoul had a decisive influence on the rapid development and spread of soul.
