Hip Hop

Hip-hop originated in New York in the 1970s and quickly developed into a global music genre. Characterised by rhythmic beats and rap, in which spoken lyrics take centre stage, hip-hop reflects the creativity of the street. The music is often based on samples and grooving beats that DJs originally mixed on vinyl records. Vinyl and turntables were central to the genre's emergence, as techniques such as scratching and mixing breakbeats revolutionised the music.
