Verve Records was founded in 1956 by Norman Granz, who brought together the catalogue of his former labels Down Home, Norgran Records and Clef Records under this new label. Verve's first releases, which ensured the label's commercial success, were Ella Fitzgerald's records. In 1961, Creed Taylor became Verve's new managing director. and promoted and produced records which are to be located in the Bossa Nova Jazz area. Under his direction artists were contracted, who at that time would be regarded as more of an experimental character, such as The Velvet Underground or Frank Zappa & The Mothers of Invention.
